Although New Zealand has many different species of waterfowl the ducks are one of the Most popular with hunters. Of all the species of duck the common Mallard is the most abundant. The Mallard Duck is mostly found in large plains or swampy gullies and nests near ponds, lakes and rivers.

Their diet consists mainly of vegetable matter which they gather from around banks or on the water surface but rarely dive for. On the whole the mallard is better on the table than most other breeds of duck. The mallard Duck is most shooters preferred Duck. It may not be the fastest on the wing, but it is among the largest and most handsome of our ducks.
